We were sitting under a hut on 1st morning and the entire structure COLLAPSED on us! One of us escaped, and looked back at the collapsed structure not knowing if the other was alive. We were very lucky that the very heavy wooden logs did not land on our heads or backs because we would have died or been paralyzed. However, one of us ended up with a heavily sprained ankle and cuts all over (eyelids, neck, arm, knee, etc.). This ruined our vacation as he could not swim (risk of infection) and had trouble walking. We spent several thousands on flights etc to Zanzibar from the US- this was a really great loss. Owner reaction was terrible, offering only to buy us dinner and a doctor visit- luckily we were traveling with a doctor though. Only after consulting w a lawyer, they finally agreed to reimburse us for 4 of 5 nights. But when we checked out they charged us $40/day for breakfast, orig. included in daily rate. They did not inform us earlier, though they had us sign off on other meals. The hotel is placed in a beautiful environment. It is on a lovely beach with a lot of character. They put a bar of soap in your bathroom for your stay that smells really good.
Terrific hotel with wonderful pool, views, right on the beach, good food selection and quality, superb staff. A bit pricey for being right in stone town (and therefore not on the nicest beach), but a great place to stay for those who don't have time to get out to the further parts of the island
Big clean comfortable beds, spacious room, great wifi, fridge in the room, excellent tv reception with lots of channels We didn't have hot water the first day. They fixed it the second, but the water pressure wasn't very good- I don't have thick hair and it took awhile to rinse the shampoo out... It's set back a ways from road so you need help with your bags an the food in the restaurant is limited and prices are high. Better breakfast at the Serena
