It was clean and comfortable. Location is close to I-90 yet far enough from it so that you do not hear any road noise. The hotel sits behind another hotel so that traffic noise from the street is low. There is a mall on the other side of I-90 with plenty of places to eat. There is an Olive Garden there too. The gas station, Common Cents, is at the exit/enter ramp and has one of the best prices for gas nearby. Kids running along the hallways, not really the fault of the management. Noise from other rooms was moderate but still there. Strange light switch...only one light switch next to the door controlled all the lights. Therefore there was no way to just turn on/off the lights next to the bed.
Downtown location. Construction outside starting at 6:15! Dirty floors in lobby and elevators due to workers... with no attempt to clean it up. No kitchen. Generally chaotic and noisy. No thermostats in rooms: either heat and you cook or cold and you freeze. Sorry, just a bad property.
great location in the middle of downtown Rapid City, within easy walking distance to a number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment. The rooftop bar offers a great view of the town, the Black Hills, and sunsets. A few rooms have odd configurations (#19, split behind the elevators, sharing a bathroom 'Jack-and-Jill' style) that may benefit families or friends sharing a room. The owners of this historic hotel have not invested in updating their property in a number of years, and it shows. The rooms are very small (standard Queen) - one room I stayed in had a desk that was completely unusable because there was not room to pull out the chair between the desk and the end of the bed. The "closet" was very small, only about 12" deep with only two hangers. In one room I stayed in, the closet door was firmly stuck shut, leaving me with no closet access. The bathrooms are so small that tall or large people may find them completely unusable. The A/C did not work consistently, regardless of the setting, and the drapes could not be pulled shut over the window to cut down on heat & light getting into the room. The carpets were filthy, with large red stains and decades of dirt grubbed into them. Staff are friendly enough, but so casual as to appear rude in many cases (multiple staff at the front desk.)
Staff was great. I liked the location in the downtown area. My room was a little small, but was kind of expected for a motel that old. Bathroom needed updated. Carpet & bathroom both seemed dirty
I love staying in a historic hotel. The prices were a bit hight due to Sturgis week, but I wanted to stay and enjoy the history and elegance of the hotel. The location being smack dab in the middle of downtown Rapid City was more then convient! My room was well outfitted and beautifully decorated. Additionally, during my short stay, the staff had been very helpful and friendly. The room was filthy. Now, I'm not at all a pick person and I understand "things happen" but in my mere 6hr overnight stay I encountered someone else's hair in the shower (stuck on the wall and in the drain), dirty bathroom mirrors (smears), a splinter in my foot from walking around barefoot, and dirt on my bed comforter. I rinsed the hair from the walls and ignored the drain, used other mirrors and kept my imagionation from wondering wild with speculations as to what the smears were, due to a lack of tweezers I had to squeeze and scratch the item out of my foot, and I shook the comforter out and brushed the dirt from the sheets. Oh, and I went to read the hotels room book, which offered a history write up of the hotel as well as points of interest in the area; the pages were stuck together and sticky. (I did get a bit grossed out by my sticky fingers). Additionally, the water temputure in the shower was continually inconsistent. For 30 min it ranged from scolding hot to ice cold. Continually back and forth hot then cold, hot then cold, the water never seemed to stabilize. I had about 5min of luke warm water to wash up with. The rest of the time I'd been standing there at the end of the shower spray at the back of the tub, trying to take a sponge bath. Very annoying. All of that aside, my final surprise came when I went to check out at 4a.m ,to grab a flight, and I inquired about a cup of coffee in the lobby. The (wonderful) front desk gal appoligised that they didn't have coffee in their lobby and that Seattles Best opened at 5 or 6. Not a big deal, but not what a traveler wanted to hear at 4a.m. :-) I did not notify the front desk of my annoyances because I had been just passing through and only needed a bed for the night. Also, as I said, things happen and I'm not overly picky. Brush off the annoyance and move on. Would I stay there again? Perhaps. I would check with the Adobe hotel down the street first and compare rates. If they were a bit more, I'd opt to pay the difference. If I did choose to stay at the Alex Johnson again, at the time of booking, I would mention my previous experience and ask that the room I reserve be checked by housekeeping prior to my arrival.
The curtains in the room where shear and allowed all the light from the parking lot, interstate, and medical building to come thru. Made for a very long night, didn't even need to leave a light on to find the bathroom. It was also very loud could hear everyone in the hallways and surrounding rooms. Breakfast was OK but the staff couldn't keep up with the refills.
Access to the water park The bar and grill had almost none of the menu items. Food was poor quality. Lifeguards were more interested in cleaning up early than watching the kids. I had to jump in after my child was sucked into the lazy river. No lifeguard responded or offered to help afterward. The suite was so small that you could barely walk around the queen size bed. The closet could not open due to being blocked by the bed. Check in was at 4pm without exception which is much later than most other facilities.
I accidently left an item in our room and called the next day. The staff found my item and shipped it back to me in perfect condition!
We stayed during a holiday weekend and the place was packed with families and tons of young children who were enjoying the water park. Our room was small for the price but the staff was fantastic- very professional and accommodating. Kids were running in the halls late at night. Our next door neighbors were partying late which kept us up. Again probably just the holiday weekend.
Easy to find, comfortable bed
Desk staff Lucas and Greg were wonderful. Food was good.
Water Park for the family and the grandchilldren Beds were comfy. Rooms were smaller than what I anticipated for the price. My son and his family had to stat at the La Quinta since Fairfield is not pet friendly BUT his room was cheaper and the size of room was the same as the Fairfield Inn.
The room was clean and quiet. We had our 9 month old with us and we didn't feel like we were intruding on the neighbors with his occasional cries like we did at some other hotels with paper thin walls. We didn't take advantage of the water park but it did look like it would be a lot of fun for kids. The Breakfast could have been a little better.
