great location in the middle of downtown Rapid City, within easy walking distance to a number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment. The rooftop bar offers a great view of the town, the Black Hills, and sunsets. A few rooms have odd configurations (#19, split behind the elevators, sharing a bathroom 'Jack-and-Jill' style) that may benefit families or friends sharing a room.
The owners of this historic hotel have not invested in updating their property in a number of years, and it shows. The rooms are very small (standard Queen) - one room I stayed in had a desk that was completely unusable because there was not room to pull out the chair between the desk and the end of the bed. The "closet" was very small, only about 12" deep with only two hangers. In one room I stayed in, the closet door was firmly stuck shut, leaving me with no closet access. The bathrooms are so small that tall or large people may find them completely unusable. The A/C did not work consistently, regardless of the setting, and the drapes could not be pulled shut over the window to cut down on heat & light getting into the room. The carpets were filthy, with large red stains and decades of dirt grubbed into them. Staff are friendly enough, but so casual as to appear rude in many cases (multiple staff at the front desk.)
